Chania covers the entire western third of Crete, from the Venetian harbor of its old town out to the beaches of Kissamos and up into the White Mountains, and LA MER Homes rents holiday villas to rent in Chania across that whole spread. Each is a private house with its own pool, garden and kitchen, set in a village rather than a resort, and all are within forty minutes or so of the airport.
Choosing well here means choosing a village rather than a region, because they differ more than the map suggests. Apokoronas, the rolling country between Souda Bay and Georgioupolis, holds most of our houses: Plaka sits on the slope above Almyrida with sea views from nearly every terrace, Filippos and Stiftiana lie further inland among olive groves, and Vrises is a working village on the old road with plane trees and a river running through it. Agia Marina and Platanias, a few minutes west of Chania town, run along a busier coastal strip where restaurants, bars and supermarkets are within walking distance, which suits guests who would rather not drive to dinner. Kissamos, out toward the far west, trades company for access to Balos and Falassarna.
The town itself repays several evenings. Its harbor, lighthouse, covered market and the lanes behind them are the reason many people pick this end of Crete, and from Agia Marina it is a short hop, from Apokoronas around half an hour. Beaches are close from every address: Agia Marina Beach lies 500 meters from Villa Zaneti, Almyrida Beach 1.2 kilometers below Villa Paul and Seaview Lux, Platanias Beach 2 kilometers from Villa Lucy, and Georgioupolis roughly 10 kilometers from Villa Klapas. Rome2Rio puts the airport at about 29 kilometers and 36 minutes from Almyrida, and the drives inland are similar.
What you get is the house, its pool, wifi, air conditioning, a full kitchen, parking and bed linen, with individual properties adding a hydromassage corner, a poolside annex, a gym, a fireplace or a garden of fruit trees. Some pools can be heated for a charge, and at least one operates seasonally, so check the listing for the months you want. Booking on this site means no platform commission and live availability. Eating is a large part of why people come back to this corner of Crete. Almyrida and Kalyves have tavernas along the water where lunch stretches past three, Vamos and Gavalochori do the stone-courtyard version inland, and Chania's covered market is worth a morning for cheese, raki and whatever the stalls have that week. Supermarkets in Almyrida, Kalyves and Vrises cover the basics, though the bigger shops sit on the ring road around town. Bring an appetite for driving as well, because the reward for twenty minutes on a mountain road here is usually a village square with four tables and nothing else happening.
Apokoronas for quiet countryside with the sea in sight, Agia Marina or Platanias for walkable restaurants and a livelier strip, Kissamos for the western beaches. Families with small children often prefer Almyrida and Kalyves, where the water is shallow and the villages compact. Couples tend toward the hillside houses around Plaka. Tell us the priority and we will narrow it.
Almyrida and Kalyves are the obvious two, both seaside with tavernas along the water. Plaka sits above them with the views. Vrises is inland, green and genuinely lived in, built around plane trees and a river. Filippos and Stiftiana are quieter still, surrounded by olive groves. Gavalochori and Vamos are worth an afternoon even if you are not staying there.
Chania International Airport, on the Akrotiri peninsula east of town, is about 29 kilometers and roughly 36 minutes from Almyrida by road, with the inland villages a comparable run. Agia Marina and Platanias are a similar distance on the other side of town. Heraklion adds well over an hour each way and is seldom worth the saving on a fare.
Very much so. Park on the edge and everything follows on foot: the harbor, the lighthouse walk, the covered market, the Venetian lanes and the waterfront restaurants. It is flat, compact and best after six in the evening when the heat drops. Guests staying at Agia Marina sometimes take a taxi in and walk back along the coast.
For Apokoronas, Filippos, Vrises and Kissamos, yes. Agia Marina and Platanias you could manage without one, since both have shops, tavernas and a bus route, though you would be limited. Each property includes parking for one to three vehicles. Reserve the car early for July and August, when availability across the island tightens.
Every one, for your group alone. They run from a 6m x 4.5m pool at Villa Nipos to a 10m x 3m stretch with a hydromassage section at Seaview Lux, and Villa Lucy adds an outdoor jacuzzi beside its pool. Villa Nipos operates seasonally between April and November, so check dates on that listing in particular.
Some can, for a charge arranged when you book. Seaview Lux lists heating, as do two other properties in the Crete portfolio. It makes the difference in April, May, October and November, when daytime air is pleasant but water takes weeks to catch up. Between June and September nobody needs it. Ask us and we will confirm for the house you want.
Most are a short drive rather than a walk, which is normal for this part of Crete and worth knowing before you book. Villa Zaneti at 500 meters from Agia Marina Beach is the nearest of the featured six. The Plaka houses sit 1.1 to 1.2 kilometers above Almyrida, uphill on the way back. Every listing states its own figure.
Villa Zaneti puts all four bedrooms on the ground floor with en-suites and has a fully fenced garden, which removes two of the usual worries at once. Villa Paul has a separate poolside annex that older children tend to claim. Villa Klapas has a big garden with fruit trees. Cots and high chairs can be requested on most properties.
May, June, September and early October, for warm settled days without peak crowds or prices. July and August are hot and busy, with the sea at its warmest. April and late October are pleasant if you have a heated pool. Winter here is green and frequently wet, since the mountains catch weather that misses the south coast.
The house, its pool, wifi, air conditioning, kitchen, parking and bed linen. Extras vary by property and can include towel service, cots, high chairs and pool heating, and some listings hold a refundable security deposit. Everything is itemized before you confirm, and because you are booking direct nothing is added afterward.
No commission is added to the nightly rate, availability is live, and you deal with the company that manages the property. Payment terms, deposits and cancellation rules are set out in full before you commit, and requests like an early check-in, a cot or pool heating go to someone who can actually arrange them rather than into a messaging queue.
