Warmest Sea in Europe in Autumn 2026: Where to Swim From September to November
Autumn's warmest sea in Europe is the Levantine Basin, the eastern corner of the Mediterranean wrapped around Cyprus and Turkey's southern coast. Long-term satellite averages for Protaras put the water there at 27.2 °C for September, 25.3 °C through October and 22.1 °C by November. Further west and north the sea gives up its summer heat sooner, so the Levant stays ahead of every other Mediterranean coast all autumn, although by November Tenerife, out in the Atlantic, draws level and nudges fractionally in front.

We see this from our office in Paralimni, where guests ask us every year whether a late October swim is realistic. Rather than answer from memory, we gathered national weather service figures and satellite records for a dozen coastlines, and I think the results are more interesting than a simple ranking.
Warmest Sea in Europe: The Short Answer for Autumn
Put simply, it's the Levantine Sea, with Cyprus and the Turkish Riviera around Antalya sharing first place. Turkey's State Meteorological Service (MGM) gives long-term means for its southern shore of 27.0 °C (September), 24.6 °C (October) and 21.4 °C (November), and the Cypriot readings above land within a degree of those.
Here is how the lead changes from one month to the next, using the long-term averages in the table further down:
- September: Protaras averages 27.2 °C, with the Antalya coastline just behind; Rhodes, Malta, Crete and Sicily trail by up to about two degrees.
- October: southeast Cyprus still leads at 25.3 °C, ahead of southern Turkey and Malta's 24.0 °C norm.
- November: Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands off northwest Africa, edges in front with 22.3 °C against 22.1 °C for Protaras, though southeast Cyprus remains the warmest Mediterranean coast in our comparison.
- Quickest to cool: Black Sea resorts, Croatia's Adriatic coast and Turkey's Aegean shore.
All of these are historical monthly averages, not a forecast for autumn 2026, and the picture over a full year looks a little different (see the FAQs).
Is that what you expected? Plenty of travelers assume Spain or Portugal would be in the running, yet the Algarve around Albufeira peaks at only about 21 °C, even at the start of autumn.
Typical Autumn Sea Temperatures Across Europe (Long-Term Averages)
This table brings together three kinds of data, and it helps to know which is which before comparing rows. Agency figures come from national weather services. Satellite climate averages are multi-year means built from NOAA satellite readings and published by seatemperature.org.
Climate reference figures are long-term averages from weather2travel.com, rounded to whole degrees. Only the MGM series states its period; Malta's norms, the satellite pages and weather2travel do not publish theirs.

Where agency and satellite numbers overlap, they agree closely. Malta's October norm compares with a Valletta satellite figure of 23.4 °C, and the MGM value for that month sits beside 24.7 °C for Antalya.
Bear in mind these are monthly means: water keeps cooling as the weeks pass, so the opening days usually sit above the average and the closing days below it.
For the island overall, the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Tourism says open water "hovers above 22° C from June to November", which matches the satellite picture well. Our Cyprus sea temperature by month guide covers the full year if you also want winter figures.
Why Does the Eastern Mediterranean Stay So Warm?
Three things work together here, and none is especially mysterious.
It Sits Further South
According to Britannica, the 40th parallel runs through the middle of the western basin, whereas the matching line out east is 34° N, and Britannica treats that gap in latitude as the reason for higher surface readings in the Levant. It is one factor among several, working alongside the circulation and evaporation described below. Stronger sunshine across a longer summer means the water begins autumn with more stored heat.
Cooler Atlantic Water Flows In From the West
Britannica also describes a continuous inflow of Atlantic surface water through the Strait of Gibraltar, which travels along North Africa and stays recognizable as far as the Sicilian channel and even off the Levant coast. That fresh supply arrives first along southern Spain, which helps explain, I think, why Málaga runs several degrees behind Cyprus all autumn.
A Closed Basin That Evaporates Hard
The Mediterranean receives only about one third of the water it loses to evaporation, and summer salinity can approach 40 parts per thousand toward the east, the same encyclopedia notes. A study in Frontiers in Marine Science found Levantine surface water off Israel reaching 30 °C in summer, among the highest temperature and salt values in the region.
Where is the hottest point of all? Britannica places the highest August means in the Gulf of Sidra off Libya, at about 31 °C, followed by Iskenderun on Turkey's southeastern corner at roughly 30 °C.
How Each Autumn Month Compares
September: Summer Water Across the South
September is the easy month. Most Mediterranean coasts listed above still average 24 °C or more, with Spain's Alboran coast and the Aegean side of Turkey the exceptions, and Malta's September norm of 26.1 °C shows how much heat the central basin is holding. Even Turkey's northern shore averages 22.5 °C at this point. Honestly, if your trip falls early in autumn, the choice of island matters less than you might think.
October: Where the Gap Opens
October is when the field separates. Cyprus and Antalya hold around 25 °C, Malta slips to 24 °C, Heraklion on Crete averages 22.8 °C and Palermo 22.4 °C, while Dubrovnik drops to roughly 20.7 °C.
For many of our guests this is the sweet spot: warm water, quieter beaches and softer afternoons. If you are leaning toward that month, our notes on swimming and things to do in Cyprus in October go into more detail.
November: Only a Few Coasts Stay Above 21 °C
As November arrives, the list of genuinely mild seas gets short. Tenerife now tops the comparison at 22.3 °C, Cyprus's southeast coast follows closely with 22.1 °C, southern Turkey manages 21.4 °C, Malta 21.0 °C, while Crete, Sicily, Croatia and Spain's Mediterranean shore all slip below that mark.
Visit Cyprus notes that during November "even sunbathing and swimming can too" be enjoyed, which sounds about right to us. Our guide to Cyprus in November explains what else the month is like on the island.
The Atlantic Exception: Are the Canary Islands Warmer in Late Autumn?
Tenerife and its neighbors behave differently from every Mediterranean destination here. Britannica explains that the Canary Current is cool because of upwelling driven by offshore winds from Africa, which is why the Canaries never reach the late summer peaks you see in Cyprus.
The flip side is stability. Around Playa de las Américas the sea averages 23.7 °C in September, 23.6 °C in October, barely moving, then eases to 22.3 °C. By December it is still about 20.9 °C, whereas Protaras has cooled to roughly 19.6 °C.
So which is better? Cyprus wins the first two autumn months comfortably, November tips fractionally toward Tenerife, a gap of 0.2 °C that no swimmer would notice, and from December the Atlantic side pulls clearly ahead. Our Canary Islands vs Cyprus comparison looks at the wider trade-offs.
Which Seas Lose Their Heat Fastest?
Black Sea coasts are the clearest example. Along Turkey's north, the long-term average falls from 22.5 °C to 15.3 °C between September and November, according to the MGM record, and Sunny Beach in Bulgaria drops to a satellite mean of 13.3 °C.
The Adriatic and Aegean also cool quickly:
- Dubrovnik: from 24.3 °C in early autumn to a November average of 18.2 °C.
- Turkey's western coast: from 23.3 °C down to 18.0 °C over the same period, per the MGM Aegean series.
- Trieste: Britannica records February means of about 5 °C around this northern tip, the lowest surface readings anywhere in the Mediterranean.
Cyprus East vs West in Autumn: A View From Paralimni
This is where local knowledge helps. Climate reference averages show Protaras at 27, 25 and 22 °C across the three autumn months, against Paphos at 26, 24 and 21 °C. One degree may not sound like much, and how much it matters is personal, but some swimmers notice it late in the season.
A word of caution, though: satellite records give identical figures for Protaras, Ayia Napa and Larnaca, because those resorts fall within one data grid. So we would not claim that any single beach on our side is warmer than another, only that the southeast generally runs slightly ahead of Paphos.
For clarity, LA MER Homes has no villas in Paphos, Coral Bay or Limassol. Our homes sit along the east and southeast coast, from Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis to Ayia Napa, Paralimni and Cape Greco, plus Larnaca district around Finikoudes and Xylofagou, including villas in Protaras close to Fig Tree Bay, and our guide comparing Protaras with Paphos sets out the other differences.
Are Mediterranean Waters Getting Warmer?
Yes, and noticeably so. The Copernicus European State of the Climate 2025 report puts the Mediterranean's annual surface average at 21.35 °C for 2025, which is 1.03 °C above normal and second only to the 21.50 °C recorded in 2024.
A few more findings stand out:
- Marine heatwaves covered the entire Mediterranean every year since 2022, and in each of the last three years the whole basin saw at least strong heatwave conditions, says Copernicus.
- Since the 1980s this sea has warmed by about 1.4 °C, compared with roughly 0.6 °C globally.
- The European Environment Agency reports Black Sea warming of around 0.5 °C per decade between 1991 and 2025.
- Copernicus Marine recorded a first half of 2026 with a basin mean of 18.07 °C, the third warmest on record, with heatwave conditions over 98% of its area.
What does that mean for an autumn trip? A given week can run noticeably above the averages shown earlier, though I would still plan around long-term means rather than hope for a record.
How Warm Does Water Need to Be for Swimming?
The RNLI defines anything below 15 °C as cold water, the threshold at which a shock response becomes a real risk, and its advice if you get into trouble is to "Float to Live" for a minute or so while the initial gasp reflex passes.
By that definition, cold water shock is mainly a Black Sea concern by November, where Sunny Beach drops to 13.3 °C and Turkey's northern coast hovers near the line. Warmer water is not automatically safe, though: weather, currents, waves, your own ability and how long you stay in all matter, so swim at lifeguarded beaches where you can. Comfort is personal too, and a breezy afternoon can make 22 °C feel cooler than the number suggests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which European coast has the warmest water in October?
Cyprus usually has Europe's warmest October sea, with Turkey's Antalya coast close behind. Satellite averages put Protaras at 25.3 °C that month, while MGM, the Turkish weather service, records 24.6 °C as its long-term mean for that coastline since 1970. Malta follows with a norm of 24.0 °C from its Met Office, and Crete manages 22.8 °C around Heraklion. Spain's Mediterranean coast trails further, at about 20.4 °C along the Costa del Sol, according to seatemperature.org.
Is the Cyprus sea still swimmable in November?
Yes, most people find a November swim in these waters pleasant. Visit Cyprus, the official tourism site, states that offshore water remains over 22 °C through November, and satellite data for Protaras and Ayia Napa gives a monthly mean of 22.1 °C. That is well above the 15 °C cold water threshold the RNLI uses. Sheltered coves around Cape Greco and Protaras tend to be calmer on windy days, which makes a big difference to how warm a swim actually feels.
Is the Mediterranean warmer than the Black Sea in autumn?
Yes, by a wide margin, and the difference grows each month. Long-term MGM records put Turkey's Mediterranean coast at 24.6 °C during October, then 21.4 °C a month later, compared with 19.1 °C and 15.3 °C along its Black Sea shore. In Bulgaria, the Sunny Beach satellite mean falls to 13.3 °C by late autumn, below the RNLI cold water line, so a November dip there is really one for hardy regulars.
Does sea temperature change much during the day?
Not much in open water, although very shallow spots can warm slightly. The Cyprus tourism ministry states there are no significant daily fluctuations in sea temperature except in very shallow areas, and that water three or four meters deep near the coast is similar to the open sea. So an early morning swim at Nissi Beach should feel close to an afternoon one at the same spot, with wind and waves mattering far more than the clock.
Which European sea is warmest across the whole year?
It depends on the month, because no single European coast leads all year. In summer, Levantine waters usually come out on top, with satellite averages of 28.8 °C off Antalya and 28.1 °C off Protaras in August. Winter hands the lead to the Atlantic: Tenerife holds a January mean of 20.2 °C, against 17.7 °C at Protaras. As a basin, the Mediterranean averaged 21.35 °C across 2025, according to Copernicus.
What is the warmest sea in the world?
The Persian Gulf holds the record for the hottest sea surface reading. A 2020 study in Marine Pollution Bulletin verified a temperature of 37.6 °C at an offshore station in Kuwait Bay, in the northwest of that body of water. Nothing in European waters comes close; Britannica gives the Bay of Iskenderun in southern Turkey an August mean of about 30 °C, which ranks near the top for anywhere around the Mediterranean.
Planning an Autumn Swim in Cyprus
When it comes to warmest sea in Europe rankings, the numbers point east, to Cyprus and its Levantine neighbors, with September and October the strongest months and November still kind to anyone who likes a cooler, quieter swim, even if Tenerife draws level by then.
Our team in Paralimni is always happy to talk through which part of the season suits you, and when you are ready you can check live availability and book directly with LA MER Homes, with no third-party fees and a private pool waiting for the days you would rather stay out of the sea.
