Where Is Hot in Europe in October? The Warmest Places for 2026, Ranked
If you are wondering where is hot in Europe in October, official climate averages point first to the south-east coast of Cyprus, where Larnaca records an average afternoon peak of 28.3°C. Tenerife, Paphos, Lanzarote and Antalya follow closely at roughly 26 to 27°C, with Seville, Malta and Madeira a step behind at about 25 to 26°C, while Croatia has already cooled to around 20 or 21°C.

That is the short answer, and I will admit it suits us rather nicely, since our team at LA MER Homes lives and works in Paralimni, a few minutes inland from the Protaras coastline.
So instead of asking you to take our word for it, every climate figure below links to the official national agency that published it. Where another destination beats Cyprus on something that genuinely matters, such as balmier nights or fewer wet afternoons, I say so plainly.
In short: among the fifteen holiday spots compared here, Larnaca in south-east Cyprus has the highest average October maximum at 28.3°C. Tenerife South and Paphos come next on 26.8°C, with Lanzarote just behind on 26.7°C. The Canaries tend to offer milder nights with fewer wet spells, whereas Cyprus leads for Mediterranean beach warmth. All of these are long-term climate averages, not forecasts for October 2026.
Last fact-checked: 13 October 2026.
Europe's Warmest October Destinations at a Glance
The ranking uses one measure for every row: the average daily maximum air temperature, which is the closest official figure to how warm an afternoon tends to feel.
A quick word on "Europe". We have used the holiday-market sense of the word, so the list includes the Canaries and Madeira, two Atlantic archipelagos off Africa, plus Antalya on the Asian side of Turkey. Cyprus is an EU member state, although geographically it sits in the far eastern Mediterranean, closer to western Asia than to mainland Europe.

How to read these numbers: each daytime value is the mean of all October daily maximums recorded at that station, not a guaranteed temperature at any particular hour. Nightly lows are likewise averages of daily minimums, usually reached around dawn rather than at dinnertime. Reference periods differ between national agencies, as the final column shows, so a gap of a few tenths of a degree between two rows tells you very little, whereas a difference of two or three degrees tells you plenty.
*Malta's figure is the thirty-year norm quoted by its airport forecasters in their November 2022 monthly summary, which names neither the years covered nor a typical overnight figure, so please read that row as indicative rather than strictly comparable.
Best Pick by Holiday Priority

How We Put This Ranking Together
Most autumn lists online blend sea readings with air temperatures, quote ranges without saying where they came from, or switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit halfway down the page. Comparing October temperatures fairly means using the same yardstick everywhere, so we wanted something you could check yourself.
- A single yardstick: the mean daily maximum for October, taken from published climate normals rather than any one year's forecast.
- Official publishers only: Spain's AEMET, Portugal's IPMA, Turkey's MGM, the Luqa MetOffice in Malta, and the Cypriot, Greek and Croatian services through the World Meteorological Organization's city pages.
- Airport stations where possible, since that is roughly where most visitors land and stay along each coast.
- Supporting columns: nightly lows, monthly rainfall and rain days, because a sunny afternoon followed by a soaking evening is not quite the holiday most people picture.
Sicily turns up on plenty of autumn shortlists, and perhaps deservedly. We could not access the Italian Air Force's published averages for Palermo or Catania, though, so we left the island out rather than guess.
What Does "Hot" Really Mean in Autumn?
It is worth pausing on the word itself, because people use it loosely. In July, hot might mean 35°C and a dash for shade; by October, most UK travelers simply want reliable beach weather, warm enough to swim, sunbathe and eat outside without a coat. Genuine hot weather this deep into autumn is therefore limited to a handful of southern beach destinations, which is what the ranking below reflects.
My own rough rule, after years of watching guests arrive from Manchester or Gatwick, is this: afternoons above 25°C feel like summer, the low twenties resemble a pleasant spring day, and anything under 20°C suits sightseeing more than lounging by a pool.
By that measure, only the top seven or eight places in our table qualify as properly hot. The rest are lovely, mild and often quieter, but you would probably pack differently for them.
1. Cyprus: The Warmest Afternoons Among the Places Compared
Larnaca's average high of 28.3°C is the warmest figure we found anywhere, paired with lows around 17.4°C and only 11.6 mm falling across fewer than four wet days, per Cypriot met service figures hosted by the WMO.
No other station in the table reaches that afternoon figure. It is the main reason that corner of Cyprus sits first, and, honestly, it matches what we feel on the ground each autumn.
Is Cyprus Hot in October?
Yes, at least by northern European standards. The opening fortnight still feels like a gentle continuation of summer, and most visitors spend their afternoons in swimwear rather than sleeves.
The water helps as well. The island's Deputy Ministry of Tourism notes that offshore water holds above twenty-two degrees right through to November, so swimming remains perfectly comfortable all month. For month-by-month readings, our Cyprus sea temperature guide lays them out in full.
Evenings are the part people tend to underestimate. A 17°C night is pleasant for dining outdoors, yet I would still pack a light layer for strolls back from the harbor.
For a fuller look at the month, including what stays open and which activities suit the season, our complete guide to Cyprus in October covers everything in detail.
Which Is Warmer, the East Coast or Paphos?
The east, by a clear margin. Paphos Airport averages a 26.8°C daily maximum and a 17.8°C minimum, with 21.4 mm spread over 3.7 days, as listed in the WMO record for Paphos.
Both stations share the same 2002 to 2011 dataset, which makes this a like-for-like comparison: Paphos comes out 1.5 degrees cooler than Larnaca with close to double the rainfall, even though the count of wet days is almost identical.
I should be upfront: LA MER Homes has no villas around Paphos, Coral Bay or Limassol, since ours sit along the east and southeast coast and in Larnaca district, so we have no reason to talk Paphos down. It is lovely, with superb archaeology. For pure autumn warmth, though, the data favors the eastern shore, home to Larnaca, Protaras and the resort of Ayia Napa.
What an October Week Around Protaras Feels Like
Mornings are bright and still, ideal for a walk past the sea caves of Cape Greco National Forest Park before the sun climbs.
By late morning most families have drifted down to Fig Tree Bay or one of the smaller coves nearby. Beach bars generally keep trading at this point in the year, in our experience, although some start trimming their hours as the month winds down.
Afternoons are when a private pool earns its keep. Children can swim, nap and splash about again without anyone hunting for sunbeds, which I think is half the appeal of an autumn villa stay. Unheated pools do cool as the nights lengthen, though, so if water temperature matters to you, ask whether heating is offered on the property you are considering.
Later on, Ayia Napa's harbor and the restaurants along the Protaras strip stay lively enough for dinner out, yet calmer than in August. Larnaca also makes an easy day trip for its seafront promenade and the historic quarter around the Church of Saint Lazarus.
If that sounds appealing, our villas in Protaras sit within easy reach of the bay and the cape.
Travel from the UK is straightforward, too. British Airways puts its typical scheduled flight time from the two main London airports into Larnaca at approximately four hours and forty-five minutes.
2. The Canaries: Balmier Nights and Hardly Any Rain
Here is where Cyprus loses an argument or two, and fairly so.

Tenerife South's average maximum trails Larnaca's by only 1.5 degrees, yet its average minimum holds at 20.0°C, per Spain's national weather agency. That is more than two degrees milder than either station on Cyprus overnight. Because the Spanish and Cypriot figures come from different reference periods, treat those gaps as a strong indication rather than an exact measurement.
If your children are still splashing about at seven in the evening, or you simply dislike reaching for a cardigan once the sun drops, the archipelago has a genuine edge. Rain is close to an afterthought as well, with fewer than three wet days on every island.
Geographically these islands lie off north-west Africa, but politically they belong to Spain and the EU, which is why they appear on almost every European winter-sun shortlist.
Which Canary Island Is Best in October?
The three main islands are remarkably close on paper, so your choice probably comes down to scenery and flight schedules more than the thermometer.
- Tenerife: the hottest daytime readings of the trio plus the lowest count of rainy days.
- Lanzarote: the most sunshine, at 235 hours for the month, and the lowest rainfall.
- Gran Canaria: the balmiest evenings by a whisker, with slightly more rain than its neighbors.
Are they better than Cyprus for an autumn break, then? Honestly, I waver on this. They come out ahead on warm evenings and dry skies; Cyprus wins on afternoon heat, Mediterranean history and, if you ask us, the beaches. Our Canary Islands vs Cyprus comparison weighs the pair up across all four seasons.
3. Antalya: Hot Enough, but Is It Europe?
Antalya averages 26.6°C at midday in October and 15.4°C overnight, plus 70.6 mm over roughly five rainy days and 7.8 sunny hours daily, according to Turkey's State Meteorological Service.
So it is warm, without question. Rainfall is the catch: about six times Larnaca's total, and autumn storms along the Turkish Riviera can be heavy.
There is also a geography question worth flagging. Turkey is a transcontinental country and Antalya lies on the Anatolian side, technically in Asia, so whether it counts depends on how strictly you define the word. We included it because so many UK travelers weigh it up against Cyprus or Rhodes.
Where in Spain Does October Stay Hot?
Leaving the Canaries aside, mainland Spain's warmest October afternoons belong to Andalusia, and to Seville in particular.

Notice the swing between day and night in Seville: nearly twelve degrees. That inland city heats up beautifully by mid-afternoon and then cools quickly, which makes it a superb base for a cultural break but a less obvious pick for a beach-and-pool family week.
Malaga, on the coast, has a gentler swing and fewer wet days, though its afternoons run roughly two degrees below Seville's. For mainland Spain, then, Andalusia is the answer; the precise town depends on whether you want cathedrals or coastline.
Malta in October: Warm Days, Wetter Skies
Malta's thirty-year norm for the average maximum is 25.0°C, alongside 77.6 mm of rainfall and 217.7 sunny hours, as stated in the Malta International Airport MetOffice review of October 2022.
The same forecasters put the typical sea reading for October at 24°C in their 2023 monthly report, so swimming is still very much on.
Two caveats are worth knowing. That summary does not say which thirty years the norm covers, and it gives no average low, so the Maltese row in our ranking is a guide rather than a like-for-like figure. Its rainfall is also substantial, nearly seven times what Larnaca receives.
Malta is compact, historic and easy to reach, and plenty of couples love it in autumn. If you are torn between the two islands, our Malta vs Cyprus guide covers beaches, crowds and the length of each season.
Which Part of Portugal Is Warmest in October?
Madeira, rather than the mainland. Funchal averages 24.9°C by day and a mild 18.6°C overnight, according to IPMA's climate normals for Funchal.
The trade-off is moisture: 89.5 mm falls over six or seven wet days, so a week there may include a damp afternoon among the levadas.
Over on the Algarve coast, Faro reaches 23.2°C on a typical afternoon and dips to 15.3°C, with 60.6 mm spread across five or six damp days, as the Faro station normals record.
That is pleasant rather than scorching. Golfers and walkers tend to love the Algarve in autumn, but if heat is the priority, Portugal's warmest option sits out in the Atlantic.
Which Greek Island Is Hottest in October?
Among the island stations Greece's meteorological agency publishes through the WMO, Rhodes comes out warmest at 24.5°C, with nights close to 17°C and 65.5 mm falling, per the Rhodes record.
The others cluster closely below it:

We did not find published figures for Kos or Santorini in the same series, so I would rather not guess where they land.
What stands out is a west-east split. The Ionian pair, Corfu and Kefalonia, are noticeably wetter, with Kerkyra's station logging nearly twelve rainy days, while Samos in the eastern Aegean stays comparatively dry.
We look after a small number of villas in Crete and Corfu as well as Cyprus, so this is not a dig at Greece. Crete is wonderful at this time of year; it simply runs about five degrees below Larnaca's afternoon average. Our Cyprus vs Crete guide compares both islands on food, costs and seasons.
Croatia in October: Is It Hot?
Not really. Split averages 20.0°C at its daily peak and 14.1°C once night falls, with 78.1 mm over about nine showery days, according to Croatia's meteorological and hydrological service data on the WMO site.
Dubrovnik is a touch milder at 21.4°C, yet it is also the wettest place in our main table, recording 109.9 mm across ten or more wet days, as shown in its WMO entry.
That makes autumn a fine time for wandering the old town walls without summer crowds, perhaps, but not one I would recommend to anyone chasing beach weather. If sunbathing is the plan, the Dalmatian coast is better saved for June or September.
Where Is Hot in Europe in October for Half Term?
For families, the school calendar usually fixes travel dates before the weather does, so it helps to know exactly when the break falls.
When Is October Half Term 2026?
There is no single national date in England. GOV.UK asks parents to check with their local council, and most councils have settled on the final week before November.
- Oxfordshire: 26 to 30 October, per the county council.
- Buckinghamshire: Monday 26 until Friday 30 October 2026, per Buckinghamshire Council.
- Surrey: a fortnight off, running from 19 October, per Surrey County Council.
British clocks also go back on 25 October 2026, the Sunday before most of those breaks begin, so dark evenings will already have arrived at home by the time you fly out.
What Should Families Weigh Up?
The tail end of the month is the coolest period everywhere on this list, so a few points matter more than they would earlier in autumn:
- Afternoon highs. Larnaca, Tenerife and Paphos lead the table, all at 26.8°C or above.
- Night temperatures. The Canaries hold around 19 to 20°C overnight; Cyprus sits nearer 17 to 18°C.
- Rain days. An average under four, as in Cyprus or the Canaries, points to fewer interruptions overall, though it cannot promise that any particular week stays dry.
- Flight length. Young children notice the difference between a three-hour hop and a five-hour haul more than adults do.
- Space. Hotels can feel cramped when everyone is awake by six; a villa with its own kitchen and pool gives the family room to spread out.
Our family villas are set up with exactly that kind of week in mind, with full kitchens, parking, wifi and air conditioning as standard.
Villa or Hotel for an October Break?
This is a question we hear often, and the answer hinges on how you like to spend each day. Hotels make sense for short city stays, Seville being an obvious example, where you are out exploring from breakfast until late.
For beach holidays, especially with children, a villa tends to work better in autumn than in high summer. Pools are yours alone, mornings start at whatever pace suits, and you can cook simple meals when nobody fancies another restaurant.
There is also the weather angle. On the rare showery afternoon, having a spacious living room, a kitchen and a covered terrace is far more comfortable than sitting in a hotel bedroom waiting for the clouds to pass.
Early or Late October: Does It Make a Difference?
Monthly averages hide a cooling trend. The first week across the eastern Mediterranean often feels like late summer, while the final days can bring the season's first proper downpour and noticeably fresher evenings.
If you have flexibility, the first ten days or so are the safer bet for reliably warm temperatures. Families tied to half term will find the destinations at the very top of the table, Cyprus and the Canaries, give them the most margin as temperatures ease, with the Canaries particularly steady.
Would I avoid late October altogether? No. The beaches are quieter, the light softens beautifully over the cape near Ayia Napa, and, as mentioned earlier, Cypriot water keeps its summer warmth well into November.
Packing for October Sun in Southern Europe
Packing for this month is slightly trickier than for August, because you are effectively dressing for two seasons within a single day. Here is what tends to earn its place in the suitcase:
- Swimwear and high-factor sunscreen: the midday sun this far south still has real bite, even when the breeze feels gentle.
- A light jumper or fleece: handy in Seville, around Faro or along the Dalmatian shore, where evenings slip into the mid-teens.
- A compact umbrella: close to essential for Corfu, Dubrovnik or Madeira, though probably surplus to requirements on Lanzarote.
- Comfortable walking shoes: autumn is a lovely time for coastal trails, from the cliffs above Konnos to the levadas that wind through Madeira's hills.
- A refillable bottle: walking in 28°C sunshine is thirsty work, and you will want water with you on every outing.
Would your suitcase look any different for a villa than for a hotel? Slightly, perhaps; with a washing machine and a kitchen on hand, most families find they can travel lighter.
Where Is Hot and Cheap in October?
To be candid, we have not ranked these destinations by cost. Fares and rental rates move constantly, any figure would be out of date within weeks, and we found no official dataset comparing them fairly. A few general principles for saving money on autumn sun do hold, though:
- Travel outside school breaks if you can. The week before or after half term is typically calmer at airports and resorts alike.
- Pick self-catering. Cooking breakfast and a few dinners at your villa cuts daily spending far more than people expect.
- Book direct. At LA MER Homes, booking straight with us means no third-party fees, with live availability shown on every property and nothing added at checkout.
- Look at shoulder-season destinations where summer crowds have thinned yet the water is still inviting, which is exactly what Cyprus offers this month.
So Which October Destination Should You Choose?
After all those numbers, here is how I would sum it up for different kinds of trip:
- Hottest afternoons with a warm sea: south-east Cyprus, from Larnaca up to Pernera and Kapparis.
- Warmest nights and driest skies: Tenerife, Lanzarote or Gran Canaria.
- City break with real heat: Seville, accepting cooler evenings.
- History plus warmth on a small island: Malta or Rhodes, with an umbrella packed just in case.
- Lush scenery over beach time: Madeira.
- Sightseeing without crowds, warmth optional: Dubrovnik or Split.
Which of those sounds most like the trip you have in mind?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the sea warm enough for swimming in Europe in October?
Yes, across the southern Mediterranean the water stays comfortably swimmable through October. The Cyprus tourism authority says open-sea temperatures around the island remain above 22°C from June to November, and Malta's airport forecasters give an October sea norm of 24°C for the Maltese Islands. That is one reason the month still suits families staying near Nissi Beach or Konnos Bay, where an early evening swim feels entirely normal.
Which of these places gets the most October sunshine?
Lanzarote leads the stations where we found sunshine data, logging 235 hours in AEMET's Lanzarote Airport normals. Gran Canaria follows on 220, Malta has a norm of 217.7, while Seville, Malaga and Tenerife South all sit between 214 and 216. Antalya averages 7.8 hours each day per Turkish state figures. Sunshine totals for Cyprus are published on another reference period, so we have kept them out of this comparison.
Will I need a jacket in the evenings?
Probably a light one, depending on where you go. Seville drops to an average October low of 14.4°C according to AEMET, and Split falls to 14.1°C based on Croatian service data. Larnaca's typical minimum is 17.4°C, which suits short sleeves with a thin layer for later. Only the Canary Islands, where Gran Canaria holds 20.1°C overnight, let you skip extra clothing almost entirely, so pack accordingly.
Which October destinations see the most rain?
Corfu and Dubrovnik are the wettest in our research. Corfu records 137.7 mm over 11.8 rain days, as Greek national data supplied to the WMO shows, while Dubrovnik logs 109.9 mm in 10.3 days. Funchal on Madeira and Malta also exceed 75 mm. By contrast, Lanzarote averages just 10 mm and Larnaca 11.6 mm, making Spain's Atlantic islands and south-east Cyprus the driest choices for anyone keen to avoid indoor afternoons.
How long is the flight from London to Cyprus?
A scheduled service from London Heathrow or Gatwick to Larnaca International Airport takes approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, according to British Airways. Larnaca is the natural arrival point for every LA MER Homes villa, from Larnaca district and Xylofagou to Protaras, Paralimni and the Ayia Napa coast, whereas the airport at Paphos mainly serves holidaymakers bound for the west. We can also arrange airport transfers for eligible stays, so nobody has to wrestle car seats at arrivals.
Final Thoughts: Finding October Heat in Europe
So, where is hot in Europe in October? On the official numbers, south-east Cyprus enjoys the highest daytime readings, the Canaries offer gentler nights plus drier skies, and Seville, Malta, Madeira and Rhodes make good second choices depending on what kind of trip you want.
Croatia and the Ionian islands are lovely, but by this point of the autumn they are mild, not tropical.
If the Cypriot east coast sounds right for you, have a browse of what is free during half term or earlier in the month. You can book direct with LA MER Homes without any booking-platform charges, and our Paralimni team is always happy to answer questions before you commit, whether that is about beaches, transfers or simply which week looks warmest.
